Here's a report my union published on charter schools, in case you were wondering why I have such nutty ideas about education reform.

There've been an number of days with no word recently, and at least one word that had a day but never made it to LJ. The new thing seems to be poems of the day. Yesterday's was "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking" by Walt Whitman. Today's is "God's Grandeur".

Every year I've been putting together a calendar of screenshots or photos. This year I thought I'd try inviting my friends to contribute. If you have a digital image that you think would mean something to me, feel free to show it off by linking it to a reply to this post (or email it to me if you prefer.)

For all the times it wasn't in the dictionary.

tickybox!

(It's actually yesterday's word, but it waited patiently until I remembered it.)

This week's aloo saag was made with kale, beet greens, some wilted escarole, purple onions and a little bit of cream. It was going to be purple saag until I started reading that Alison Bechdel book.

The cranberry raisin bread doesn't count, because they're farm stand cranberries not farm share cranberries.

The escarole is in sad shape, and needs to be made into bean soup real soon now. (Once it's wilted it is much more cabbage like and much less lettuce like.)

The big orange thing was not in fact a pumpkin but instead was some weird aphrodisiac Japanese squash with a long shelf life. However, I had my heart set on pumpkin pie, so it's in the microwave being cooked to mush right now. I managed not to let it explode in the microwave *and* not to cut any of my fingers off while peeling it, but the first round of microwave-while-whole did not actually cook it completely. Also, one little squash contains more than one pie worth of squash meat. Cans may really be the way to go for punkin pie.

I still have hopes of leek and potato soup; maybe Tuesday?

Edit for escarole recipe: http://www.recipepuppy.com/show/recipe/801029/ The pie is inedible -- too much cloves and the wrong kind of squash.

My vision is now bad enough that replacing the lenses on my glasses has an effect a lot like buying a new graphics card. So it's probably worth $400 to do that next fall.

I find this line of reasoning disturbing.

I'm making cream of too much celery in my refrigerator soup. Friday (I think it was Friday...) I made aloo saag; I've never seen yoghurt go bad before. I found another leek, so there's potato soup in my future. And I want to try hiding some of the carrots in borscht.

So much soup!

Edit: The celery soup tastes strongly of celery, which some would consider a drawback. Triscuits and avocado make a surprisingly effective palate cleanser.

Today I get two words, because "transcendent vacuity" is too good to split up.

Today's word is Portal, for Chutnie. I promised her a noun, and this one came to my attention by briefly leaving my vocabulary. The context it was caught fleeing was that of a web portal.

I'm not going to post about potatoes, onions and garlic. I assume we all know what to do with those. I've gotten pretty good at making saag. There was more kale in the share, so I'm about to start another batch.

I've accumulated 2 tasty (i.e. not green) peppers and am going to try using up last year's zucchini in:

http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1726,151172-250192,00.html

I will probably substitute jack or Swiss cheese for the feta.

Edit: This time I made the saag in the pea soup/lentil chili pot and used the stick blender on it. The texture is much closer to what I see in restaurants.

Today's word is pollution.

Because I can't understand why it needs two l's. Anyone?

Today's word is "strength" -- chock full of chewy consonant goodness.

Thanks to [info]kirisutogomen for the suggestion.

I don't have this week's veggies yet, but am caught up on last week.

I uniformly waited too long to eat my salads, so the lettuce ended up as a tasty leaf marinade. I used oil and vinegar because I ran out of vinagrette. Tired of lettuce now.

The eggplant became baba ganoush again. The skinny little eggplants don't need to cook nearly as long as the big chubby ones. I think the flaw in my recipe has been that I'm not adding enough lemon juice.

I used the broccoli and yellow pepper (and some pinto beans and dried onions) in a potato and egg thing. The leftovers are very good with ketchup.

Baked Egg Thing

Dice 2 potatoes, microwave for 5 mins
If desired, add & cook veggies
Stir in 1/2 c milk
Stir in 1 c cheese
Season to taste
Beat in 3 eggs

Bake 40-45 minutes at 350 degrees in a buttered pie plate. Serve hot.

Today's word is "astonish". Second place goes to "exacerbate" for its juicy pile of consonants. Third place goes to "consonant".
